Preventative Skin Screening
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) commonly called Obamacare or the ACA has caused confusion for dermatology practices with the provision that makes some preventative services available without co-payments, co-insurance and deductibles, depending on the insurance payor. Often dermatology patients who request a skin screening assume that this preventative service is available. However, skin screenings do not fall under the PPACA definition of preventative services. If a skin screening is performed as part of a routine annual exam with a primary care physician and the exam has not been prompted by a previous diagnosis, then it may be covered under PPACA as part of prevention examination.
